The First Franchise
In 1973, Mr. Matsos opened the second Golden Rule on Highway 31 south of Birmingham. (the Florida Highway) This location created the same "highway roadside barbeque pit" image of the first location. In 1976 Mr. Matsos sold this location to Nick Manikides, becoming the first franchisee. This unit today still sells the limited menu, due to space constraints, and is considered the initial prototype for the limited service "roadside pit" concepts. Since this restaurant, several different locations and types of Golden Rule Barbeque concepts have been tried and tested. In the nineties, 3 restaurants, Trussville. Al., Pinson, Al., and Helena, Al. were started and still thrive today.
